A small cottage at the bank of the river Salaca with a beautiful view of the river. Only 1 km from the sea. At the cottage’s first floor is situated the nets’ works for the lamprey fisherman who owns the cottage. The second floor is used as small summer cottage with 4 beds and fireplace. Privy is outside, with entrance from the terrace. There is no tap water, but fresh water is supplied by the cottage owner from a well in neighborhood and the river is a wonderful place to wash yourself. Shower is available in the hotel which around 800 m from cottage. There is available sauna and spa as well. From the owner you can rent a boat for a good time on the river. Lamprey is a special delicacy in Latvia. Catching lamprey is not wide spread in the world. Nowadays, only here are still in use big fish-pots (in Latvian cold “tacis”). This method is unique to this place and carried down through generations with the experience of many centuries. Lamprey fish-pots are constructions of plank-way across the entire river. Around 70 fish–pots are soused to the stream and then lamprey are caught. As spring floods destroy this plank-way, it is rebuilt each summer. The lamprey season lasts from 1st of August till 1st of February, unless winter storms destroy the “tacis”. From beginning of summer until the 1st of August you may watch how this unique construction is built, by hand. During lamprey season you could agree with the cottage owner to taste fresh lamprey roasted in a special oven on the ground floor. We recommend a visit to the local museum in Salacgriva, where they have a permanent exposition about lamprey. The Salaca River is rich with fish – including Baltic salmon and salmon trout. If you want to fish in Salaca you should have a fishing card (valid for fishing in whole Latvia) and license for fishing in Salaca (for salmon and trout you need a special licence, valid for one specimen). All licenses are available to buy in Salacgriva. For reservation of this apartment please contact Baltcott by phone (+371) 756 94 35 or email andris@baltcott.com
