Once a barn, built in the times of Czar Nikolai II, this cosy cottage now feature kitchen, shower and 2 rooms with some of the decoration offering a bit of a soviet flavour. The cottage is located by the bay of Riga, in Engure village, just 50 meters from the sea. The forest is not far from the house. There is 4 single beds and 1 arm-chair as well. The cottage owners are living in a larger house on the same plot of land. A few hundred meters from cottage there is a little homestead museum. The distance to Jûrmala is approximately 40 kilometers, to Riga approximately 70 kilometers. The shower and toilet are fully modern and the soviet flavour in the interior of other rooms gives you a taste of how typical Latvian family homes looked in the soviet time. In Engure in the summertime, you will find oppurtunity to try the local smoked fish, for instance the local delicatess eelpout. Jurmala, some 40 kilometers from Engure is a famous resort with great traditions and well-known for its’ mild climate, sea, healthy air, curative mud and mineral water. But most of all Jurmala is know for its’ 33 kilometers of white sand beach. In Jurmala you find all the service and entertainment you could wish for, including the largest aquapark in northern Europe. Not far from village is Engure lake which features the richest variation of birds in Latvia. By and around the lake 170 different species of birds can be found, some of them included in the World Red list of treatened species. Lots of unusual and threatend plants are also found here. There are bird watching towers at the lake and hiking trails for observation of wild orchids, making this a particularly exiting place to visit in May and June when the orchids are in bloom. You will also find pastures of wild cows and horses. Engure lake is also a great place for fishing. For fishing in Engure it is necessary to use a boat, because the shores of the lake are overgrown. Boats can be rented in several boathouses at the lake. You will need only a standard fishing permit, which is easy to obtain.
